 UPDATE December 11th, 2011
This view shows what is refered to as the "cant" of the car which is the slope or angle at which somerthing is set.
The upper portion of this car is a large air pocket which holds the cool air generated for the dry ice compartments below. Dry ice, a frozen gas, evaporates in open air.
The low compartments of these cars were heavy insulated to inhibit the rapid cooling of the dry ice.
Prior to this type of car for transportation, dry ice was hauled in standrd insulated wooded refigerator
cars resulting in a far greater loss of poduct before arriving at their destinations.
